Fresh Air with P&O Irish Sea
P&O Irish Sea who operate ferry services between Scotland and Northern Ireland and
Liverpool – Dublin will go non smoking on all their vessels from 9th January 2006.
Terry Cairns, Managing Director – P&O Irish Sea comments “Whilst we have for many years operated a partial non smoking policy dependant on type of ship, there is an overwhelming customer demand for our vessels to be completely non smoking.
This, and impending legislation on either side of the Irish Sea, has encouraged us to introduce our complete non smoking policy across the fleet this month. The comfort and safety of all our customers and staff is very important to us and we know that this full implementation of a smoking ban will further enhance the enjoyment of all travelling with us.”
Summer Fun with P&O Irish Sea Ferries
P&O Irish Sea's ever-popular Day Trip programme
to Scotland from Ireland has recommenced and offers
a choice of up to 8 superb trips.
Following the successful introduction last year, P&O
Irish Sea are continuing to offer day trips to the Lake
District where you'll be inspired by the spectacular
natural beauty that gave us Wordsworth and Ruskin,
and Edinburgh where you can savour everything that
a bustling cosmopolitan city has to offer.
Mr James Esler, Sales and Marketing Manager, P&O
Irish Sea comments: "Our Day Trip programme is
ideal for everyone, many of whom travel numerous
times throughout the summer. With our fast ferry
service to Troon in just under two hours visitors are
minutes away from all attractions. The sailing to Troon
arrives at 0905 and departs at 2020 giving customers
more time in their chosen destinations."
The thrills and spills at Loudoun Castle Theme Park has always been a firm favourite on the day trip programme and remains on the schedule for 2005. If a more relaxing trip appeals, the golden, sandy beaches of Ayr combined with great shops, gorgeous gardens and the famous racecourse is just the ticket. Alternatively the superb Ayr Flower Show from 5 - 7 August is an excellent floral extravaganza, which should not be missed.
When the stress of the school holidays begins to bite, a day trip to Braehead Shopping and Leisure Centre provides the perfect retail therapy. From all the leading names in fashion to discounted designer brands to home furnishings at IKEA, these day trips prove very popular.
For the farming enthusiasts, a one-off day trip to Stranraer Agricultural Show and the Wigtown Show has been included in the programme following its success last year. Like all agricultural shows, this is a real family day out.
James Esler, P&O Irish Sea, Sales and Marketing Manager, comments: "We are in the unique position in that we are the only ferry operator to offer a choice of two ports in Scotland. We have tailored the day trips so that we sail into the port closest to the Scottish destination. Our route from Larne to Troon, which is just 10 minutes from Ayr and 35 minutes from Glasgow, is the perfect destination for travelling on to Edinburgh and the Lake District while our Larne-Cairnryan crossing is ideal for the Stranraer Show. No other operator can offer this flexibility."
P&O Irish Sea Ferry Line Celebrates Another Outstanding Year
P&O Irish Sea has entered 2006 with a wind in their sails following a tremendous performance by the freight division in 2005.
The year ended with the ferry company celebrating their most successful year ever, carrying almost 230,000 units on their Larne-Cairnryan route, an increase of 7% on 2003.
Volumes reached an all-time high in December due to the increased activity in the retail trade. All the major high street retailers chose P&O Irish Sea sending weekly volumes to a record 5,800 units.
While a number of factors can be cited, P&O Irish Sea is keen to point out that the quality and reliability of the vessels combined with a superb shore-based team is at the forefront of the success.
Mr Graham McCullough, General Manager, Scottish Routes, explains, “Hauliers want to be confident that their goods are going to reach their destination on time and as such reliability is a key issue within this industry. While we cannot control the weather, we do provide ships which respond positively to all weather conditions. We also carefully monitor every aspect of our service including the booking process, loading and discharge of the ships, turnaround times, frequent and timely sailings to ensure that the standards already set are maintained. We have a superb shore-based team and ships’ crews who are fully committed to ensuring that the overall service is fast and efficient.”
P&O Irish Sea has invested heavily in the Larne-Cairnryan route in recent years with the purchase of two purpose-built ships, European Causeway which entered service in 2000, and her sister ship, European Highlander, at a cost of £72m. Mr McCullough adds: “The arrival of our two new ships on our Larne-Cairnryan service has proven very successful and we are certainly seeing the return on our investment. We have recorded an increase of 34% in volume carried on this route since 2000. Hauliers know and appreciate the efficiency and reliability of this route and are making it their number one choice.”
In addition to the Larne-Cairnryan service, P&O Irish Sea’s other freight services also recorded excellent performances. The Larne-Troon service operated by European Mariner saw an increase of 21% in the volume carried while the twice-daily service from Dublin to Liverpool ended the year with a 10% increase on 2005. Mr Charlie Greene, General Manager, Southern Service, reiterated the sentiments of Graham McCullough: “The Dublin-Liverpool route is serviced by two excellent sister ships, mv Norbank and mv Norbay, which have developed a superb reputation for quality and reliability. This combined with a first-class shore-based team give hauliers confidence in our service which is evident in our performance this year.”
2006 has also started extremely well and P&O Irish Sea is aiming to match if not exceed the 2005 performance.
P&O Irish Sea Ferries, comprising a fleet of twelve conventional vessels and one fast ferry, operate an unbeatable choice of unique services between Ireland, Britain and the Continent.
